The best essential oils for allergies – find a hay fever cure

Looking for a hay fever cure to help you with your pollen allergy or grass allergy this spring and summer? Pollen season can be a nightmare if you suffer with symptoms of severe hay fever. Clients often ask me about natural remedies for hay fever. And so I have pulled together this list of the best essential oils for allergies and how to use them.

What causes allergies and hay fever?

Allergies are caused by your body’s reaction to an allergen. This triggers a histamine response – which we experience as allergy symptoms as our body works to fight off and expel the allergen.

Whether you want to avoid antihistamines or are looking for a complimentary treatment, essential oils have a host of healing benefits for seasonal ‘hay fever’. They can help cure or reduce symptoms like asthma, runny eyes, a congested nose and itchy skin caused by pollen and grass.

What aromatherapy oils are best for allergies?

Pollen, tree pollen and cut grass in the spring and summer can bring on a whole host of symptoms – from a runny nose to sinus congestion, itchy skin and eyes. The healing and soothing properties of essential oils make them perfect antidote to seasonal allergies.

When it comes to seasonal allergies and hay fever treatments, my top picks of essential oils are:

  • Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita)
  • Eucalyptus Oil (Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata)
  • Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Lavender Oil (Lavandula Angustifolia)
  • Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)
  • Lemon Oil (Citrus Limonum)

Each of these has properties that can help with itchy skin and hives, allergic rhinitis and even itchy eyes.

The best essential oils for seasonal allergic rhinitis

Pollen and grass can affect your nose, causing seasonal allergic rhinitis. My favourite blends for this are:

  • Sandalwood 3 drops
  • Frankincense 3 drops
  • Ravensara 3 drops

Add to a diffuser or Mix into 10ml of a light carrier oil like grapeseed or apricot kernel and when needed add a few drops to your palms rubbing toe hands together to create warmth and friction and then cupping your mouth and nose and deeply inhaling. Count to 4 on the inhale, hold for 4 second and slowly release the breath over 4 more second. Do this 4 plus times 3 times per day.

Another of my go to blends for treating allergic rhinitis is:

  • Hyssop 3 drops
  • Lemon 3 drops
  • Black spruce 3 drops

Where to apply essential oils for allergies?

Aromatherapy oils can be diluted and applied to the skin to help with allergy symptoms. This involves blending them with a neutral ‘carrier’ oil like almond or olive oil. If you suffer with hay fever, hives or other symptoms related to an allergy, get in touch. I can create an essential oil blend to treat your hay fever or pollen allergy symptoms, giving you relief and helping you get a better night’s sleep.

Aromatherapy oils work by being inhaled or absorbed by the skin. For best results, use the diluted oil under your nose on your chest and neck. You can also add some behind your ears, as you would perfume.

Do essential oil diffusers work for allergies?

Diffusing essential oils in a diffuser not only lifts your mood, it can also help with your allergies too. Diffusing is one of the best ways to use aromatherapy oils when it comes to curing hay fever and treating allergy symptoms.
